So I know I promised to post about, “The Maple Syrup Festival,” next, but I was feeling a little more inspired to talk about another program coming up soon. Don’t fret, though all of February and March will be Maple Season galore!
So parents, do your kids love to write? Do you see them coming up with their own great stories? Or do they struggle with their writing assignments from school? Do you find yourself having to take time out to help them write a last minute assignment? Or perhaps your child lacks the inspiration to get their work done?
I’m sure we can all relate to a time when we had to write an assignment for school we absolutely hated. It wore on and on and maybe the finished product was a failing grade. I’ve been there and I know many of you have. Do you wish there was a way to help your kid’s writing while having fun or inspire them with what they already love?
If you live in the Chicago area or are close by, perhaps this class will be a good aid. It’s called The Nature Writing Circle. This program is held at the North Park Village Nature Center and is for ages 9-12 from 1:00 pm.- 2:30 pm.
Within this class, we will explain to students the different literary forms like descriptive, fiction and non-fiction, chronological order and journalism. Here’s the fun part. After a brief introduction, we will go for a walk outside and let the students free write and explore the nature around them as a tool to open up their creativity. We have planned a scavenger hunt, quick games, and in our March meetup, we will head outside to tap a Maple Tree! That’s right, children will have a hands-on experience that they may not find elsewhere.
Students will have a great time all while learning about important writing habits that they’ll take with them to high school. Also, the class is free for everyone! (Come on guys, you can’t beat free!) So if you live in Chicago and think your children will benefit from this program, please sign up.
However, for those of you who don’t live in Chicago and can’t make it to this program, I’ll have mercy. I will post about the class and share the ideas we gathered with you all if we have a good turn out. (Fingers crossed.)
A few things to remember if you plan on attending: Registration is required. Parents must remain with children at all times. If you can, please plan to attend all three sessions to reap the best benefits of this class. Writing materials will be on hand and please do not let children bring electronics or phones. (This is their time to be in nature.) They will be learning about writing, the natural world around them, and their own creative abilities.
You can register here at this link:
Also, plan to dress for the weather since we will be spending some time outside.
